Modernization of the Epe H-Gas Underground Storage Facility

On behalf of RWE, Elpro carried out the complete reinvestment of the control and field technology at the Epe H-Gas underground storage facility between 2018 and 2023. The facility includes four high-performance compressors, ten storage caverns, and five withdrawal lines, playing a central role in the flexible and secure supply of natural gas.

As part of this large-scale modernization project, the entire field instrumentation was renewed—including the installation of new high-precision transmitters and complete re-cabling of the field devices using Profibus technology. In addition, the switchgear systems were comprehensively adapted to meet updated technical standards.

At the core of the modernization was the implementation of a new, high-availability, fail-safe control system based on SIMATIC PCS7. In total, 31 PLC systems were installed in state-of-the-art control cabinets, enabling flexible control and secure monitoring of the entire facility.

Particular attention was given to implementing the latest IT security standards and virtualizing the OS servers, ensuring maximum data security and optimal maintainability. The introduction of new function block libraries further enhanced operational efficiency and increased flexibility in plant control.

With this modernization, Elpro has ensured long-term operational safety, efficiency, and future viability for the Epe H-Gas underground storage facility.
